Alleygating Scheme

« back

Project Summary:
This project involves the erecting of self locking steel gates at the end of alleyways and passages as a simple but effective way to reduce burglary. There are a number of other advantages in addition to reducing levels of burglary. They include reduced opportunities for anti-social behaviour, including drug and alcohol misuse, fewer problems of dog fouling, fly tipping, safer play areas for children and improved community spirit and reassurance as local residents take ownership of the alleyways.

04-05 update
In all, 28 alleygates have now been installed, well in excess of the target of 20. Domestic burglaries have been reduced by 33.9% and anecdotal evidence suggests residents feel much safer. A community survey is in operation. Special measures are required for alleyways registered as 'adopted highways' before gates can be installed and police are liaising with the various agencies on this. Anecdotal evidence suggests residents feel much safer. As one resident said :
"before they were installed there were there were bottles, cans and even people sleeping in the alley ?.but now it's wonderful".

*NOTE : ADDITIONAL NRF FUNDING
This project successfully submitted a Bid for 04/05 Underspend Funding for additional work they wish to undertake under this project. They were awarded ?15,000 to be spent in 05/06:
More Alleygates - To introduce Alleygates to 14 identified sites where, through lack of funding, we have been unable to do so thus far. Identify new sites reassured by new funding and introduce quickly in order to satisfy public demand, as the impact is recognised as reducing real and perceived crime.
