Project
Summary:
Pilot Project 1: Peer Education
The project makes pupils aware of the consequences of crime to their future, the victims, their families and their peers. Ex-offenders relate their experiences to the pupils and conduct question and answer sessions. They also produce literature and videos used in Middle and High Schools to deter others from embarking on crime.
Pilot Project 2: Outreach/Detached Work
The project targets hot spot wards of the borough as outlined in the recent audit conducted by the Crime Reduction Group and Gt. Yarmouth Police. Two detached workers have formed a ?Young Person?s Awareness Group? who interact with young people in other wards to discuss strategies for reducing crime by constructive use of time. The project involves young people producing posters and videos to encourage a better regard for the area they live in.
02-03 update
Pilot Project 1 - Peer Education
The project involved pupils identified by their Headteachers from local Middle and High Schools in separate sessions.
The results from the 2x sessions of 8 pupils from one middle school are particularly encouraging. The programme has delivered its goals effectively and is well supported with evidence; both groups understand the consequences of crime and general behaviour. Although in both groups the number of young people on school report has declined in the weeks during the youth workers presence, discussion indicates that some aspects of behaviour remain unchanged. These results are promising, as a complete change of attitude and behaviour is unrealistic given the time span of the project. this particular project has highlighted the need to otuch on issues of self-esteem, negative cpeer pressure and the misrepresentation of criminal lifestyles as protrayed by the entertainment industry.
