« back

Project Summary:
The 3 Town Centre Street Wardens patrol the town centre and its surrounding area, providing help, information and guidance to the public. They also act as crime prevention agents, responding to minor incidents of anti-social behaviour and deterring crime such as theft from shops and in 2004/05 visited around 78 shops daily. The wardens liase with and provide information to the police, local authority and local businesses. During 2004/05 they reported 803 environmental issues, responded to 1,080 potential crime & disorder incidents, 206 incidents of anti-social behaviour, recorded 34 transport violations, spoke to 17,969 members of the public and answered 2,679 requests for assistance.

The NRF makes a contribution to the employment of two street wardens employed through the Employment Agency ?New Deal?scheme.

04-05 update
The wardens aim to make the town centre a cleaner, safer and friendlier place to live, work and shop. They are linked into the town centres security radio scheme and CCTV and have become the first port of call to minor crime and anti-social behaviour incidences as well as a key point of contact for the general public. They work with police and shop security staff to reduce theft and disorder and help to resolve environmental issues in liaison with GYBC. The wardens were "Highly Commended" in the first Town Centre Management Awards for the East of England.
