Police Comm'ty Supp Officers

« back

Project Summary:
NRF funding will allow the employment of three/four Police Community Support Officers (PCSO), who are employed by the Police and whose priority is to provide high visibility, proactive patrols in the Nelson and Regent wards. The officers are targeted to areas of social deprivation and high levels of crime with the aim of reducing crime and the fear of crime.

02-03 update

Five were recruited in May 2003 and after training commenced independent patrols in their designated areas in August 2003 - 3 in Regent ward and 2 in Nelson ward.

A further 3 were recruited in September and commenced training in October. It is expected that these 3 will commence independent partols in Regent ward. This will mean that there will be 6 deployed in Regent ward and 2 in Nelson ward. This reflects the fact that Regent ward will become a Priority Policing Area (PPA) from 1st April 2004

129x additional high visibility targeted patrols of six and eight hours duration have been carried out. the number of domestic burglaries in Regent ward fell from 108 to 104. Vehicle crime in Nelson ward also showed a small decrease. Anecdotally, the officers involved received positive feedback from the residents who felt reassured by their presence.
