Project
Summary:
Local research confirms that the existence of Homewatch Schemes serve to deter domestic burglary. The Homewatch Co-ordinator?s role is to support, motivate and sustain existing schemes and to encourage more schemes, especially in vulnerable areas.
It is anticipated that an increase in credible Watch Schemes will reduce the fear of crime and that there will be an increase in two-way communication helping to identify criminal activity and deter crime. The post is attached to and supported by Norfolk Police.
The Homewatch Co-ordinator has successfully started up several new Homewatch Schemes, a Pubwatch scheme and a county-wide Truckwatch Scheme.
02-03 update
The employment of a full-time Homewatch Co-ordinator has provided a necessary resource which has facilitated the creation of more watch groups and has allowed presentations to be given to targeted groups. The figures are:
Period: January to October 2003
No of new HOME watches formed = 6
No of new COMMERCIAL watches formed = 3
No of other new watches formed = 4
Currently across the 14 beats 9 have between 10 and 20 schemes, 3 have between 20 and 40 schemes and 2 have over 60 schemes each.
No of Home Watch presentations given = 18 including an Older Peoples Forum meeting and a Child Safety Week Fete
The Co-ordinator has also raised ?1,900 in funding from local industries and businesses
Future plans involve forming a PUB Watch in Great Yarmouth Town Centre and re-organising SCHOOL WATCH to include any organisations that have responsibility for the care of young people. This will be re-named CHILD WATCH
It is also the intention to include all the Borough Council's sheltered housing schemes into Home Watch
More pro-active work has been funded by the Crime & Disorder Reduction Partnership through the purchase of seven property marking kits. These have been distributed to the Community Liaison and Information Points (CLIPS) where information will be entered onto the Ringmaster computerised calling system as appropriate.
