COMMISSIONING GREAT YARMOUTH'S COMMUNITY COHESION FUND

                                           Commissioning Outcomes

As a result of the recent area-based grant commissioning processes GYLSP is pleased to announce the following contracts have been awarded to further support our ambition to build stronger and more cohesive communities in Great Yarmouth.

Successful projects are:

  • Ø An Inter-generational Project - Great Yarmouth Community Trust and partners including the YMCA will conduct outreach work to develop projects which promote interaction between age groups within communities living in the borough.
  • Ø Great Yarmouth Voluntary Sector Partnership - Will provide training and support for a number of voluntary organizations in the borough to support the ways in which they promote understanding between generations.
  • Ø Migrant Integration Project - GYROS will provide support to aid the integration of new and emerging communities in the borough through sign-posting, advocacy and referrals to a range of agencies and working closely with front-line services within the borough council particularly Environmental Health and other statutory partners to mitigate community tensions at an early stage. This will also include outreach work.
  • Ø Mediation work - a resource will be available to local Safer Neighbourhood Teams and other partners to address neighbourhood tensions through professional mediation.
  • Ø Myths and Perceptions - two small grants have been awarded to GY College Young People Champions & GYROS to work on a number of promotional campaigns dispelling myths and perceptions. Anecdotal evidence suggests that significant misinformation about provision of services and access to services and opportunities exists within our local communities.
  • Ø Out there festival - the community cohesion fund has supported the Outthere Festival this year and a provision has been made to do so next year.

We have been working hard to identify and deliver training available for front-line staff.

  • The Corporate Training Programme now includes Community Cohesion delivered via a theatre workshop. The Moving parts training is taking place this autumn to look at ‘Dealing With Difficult Situations'
  • We are part of the Multi Agency Protocol and are a reporting centre for Hate Crime. The start of our training for front-line staff commences on 22nd October.
  • We have also arranged training from MIND for an introduction in Mental Health awareness to take place next year.

There is also a commitment to supporting Participatory Budgeting Pilots across the borough. We secured extra funding from Norfolk County Strategic Partnership which will enable us to pilot the approach in a number of communities:

  • Southtown and Cobholm, Magdalen and Shrublands, South Yarmouth working with the developing neighbourhood boards in those areas.
  • Belton and Martham working with each respective Parish Council
  • Older people across the borough- working with Great Yarmouth Older People's Network

If successful, we hope to conduct a number of pilots in other communities next year.
